Dr. Vikesh Vij, a plastic surgeon in Dubai, stressed in an interview with the “Khaleej Times” that it is immoral and harmful to make false promises to patients and that cosmetic surgeries should never be carried out when the hazards exceed the advantages. He clarified that before choosing to do any cosmetic surgery, a reputable physician must always perform extensive due diligence, which includes getting a full medical history.
“In my practice, I have always adhered to a strict rule,” Dr. Vij stated. “Regardless of what the patient desires, I will not do the treatment if I feel the dangers exceed the benefits. We have an even bigger obligation to be open and honest about risks, recovery, and realistic results when it comes to elective surgery.
He made these remarks after the UAE Federal Supreme Court clarified that cosmetic surgery is an optional medical procedure, which means that physicians may be held accountable for any negligence or inadequate medical treatment. The ruling came after a terrible incident in which a surgeon failed to provide enough care during a body-reshaping treatment, resulting in the death of a woman.
Dr. Vij clarified that people seeking less expensive options overseas are a significant contributor to the large number of botched surgeries he sees. “Infections, asymmetries, and irregularities from surgeries done by unqualified people or in facilities that don’t meet sterile standards are what I notice most often,” he stated. “These complications could have been avoided with the right surgeon and conditions.”
He went on to say that these people frequently suffer from severe mental and bodily harm. “They’re dealing with consequences that shouldn’t have happened in the first place, which is heartbreaking,” he added.
Dr. Vij’s advice is unambiguous: “Never sacrifice quality to save money.” I know money is an issue, but we’re talking about your body here. Before having any cosmetic surgery, he advised patients to thoroughly investigate their doctors and look into their training, credentials, and experience.
Dr. Vikesh Vij feels that patient safety, ethical practice, and transparency must continue to be the highest goals as the UAE increases medical responsibility in the cosmetic industry. He came to the conclusion that “when done properly, cosmetic surgery can change lives—but only when guided by integrity, expertise, and care.”
