Botox is one of the most sought-after treatments for softening wrinkles, relaxing fine lines, and refreshing the face without surgery. It’s fast, effective, and safe when administered correctly—but the secret to truly great results isn’t just in the injection technique. It’s also in the aftercare.
As a plastic surgeon in Dubai, I’ve performed countless Botox treatments, and I always emphasize this to my patients: What you do after your Botox appointment matters just as much as the treatment itself.
So, whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular visitor to the injector’s chair, here are key things to avoid after your Botox session to ensure the smoothest outcome possible.
It might be tempting to touch the treated areas but please resist. Rubbing or massaging the injection sites can cause the Botox to move into muscles that weren’t intended to be treated. This can lead to unwanted side effects like drooping eyelids or uneven results. Give it time to settle, undisturbed.
I often get asked, “Can I hit the gym after Botox?” The answer is: not immediately. High-intensity workouts, hot yoga, running, or anything that raises your heart rate significantly should be avoided for at least 24 hours. These activities increase blood flow, which could cause the Botox to disperse or dilute its effectiveness.
Another important guideline: stay upright for at least 4 to 6 hours post-injection. Lying down or bending over (especially if you’re into headstands!) may shift the Botox and affect how it settles. A calm, upright day is the best kind of day after Botox.
Dubai is no stranger to heat—but after Botox, you’ll need to take a little break from it. For 24 to 48 hours, avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and even prolonged sun exposure. Heat can increase swelling and alter how the Botox interacts with your facial muscles.
Alcohol can act as a blood thinner and increase your chances of bruising at the injection sites. While a glass of wine might sound relaxing after your treatment, it’s best to wait at least 24 hours before indulging. Hydrate with water instead—your skin will thank you.
This is a big one. Avoid facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments for at least two weeks. These treatments can interfere with the placement of Botox or cause irritation to the skin as it’s healing. Let the Botox settle fully before doing anything additional.
Following proper aftercare will help you enjoy the results you’re looking for. You can typically expect to see visible improvements within 3 to 7 days, and the effects last anywhere between 3 to 4 months. I call patients at 10 day for a follow up visit and do a touch up botox if needed. Every face is unique, and so is every result—but giving your Botox the respect it deserves helps you get the best return on your investment.
At my clinic here in Dubai, I believe education is part of every aesthetic journey. My team provides detailed, personalized aftercare instructions tailored to the exact areas you’ve treated—whether it’s the frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead, or a more advanced treatment like Botox for the masseter or trapezius.
